Testing For Oil Spill

I managed to find one recipe online but involved ingredients I were unsure would work. So I contacted Green Peace and they gave me a few recipes they use when protesting.

Different Mixtures to try:
- Readymix paint and oil
- Readymix Paint on its own
- Molasses - Green Peace Recipe 
-Oilpaint and Oil - Green Peace Recipe
-Readymix Paint and Oil Paint with oil

The ready mix paint and oil didn't mix well together so caused patchiness. This wouldn't create the drenched effect over the model I desired.

Ready mix paint on its own was good, however it did dry and wasn't as shiny as the first picture. Under the lights I feel this would dry up too fast so I would need to keep applying it to the model which would waste time.

Molasses was so thick! It was hard to blend out and wasn't the thin consistency of oil I was hoping for.

 This was oil paint and oil. This was closer to what I wanted but I didn't want the skin to show as much so thought about adding the ready mix paint underneath.

Perfect!!! mixture of ready mix paint with the oil paint and oil over the top. This create the dark effect I wanted of oil and the slippy shine I wanted that will be all over the models body.

I have now found a photographer thats work I think is amazing. He is a first year so has more times on his hands to be able to shoot my whole book. I sat down with him before hand went over my ideas and what I wanted to portray through the book.

I need to book a studio and shoot the oil slick look.

Inspiration for Oil Spill

WORKING OUT MOOD AND OVERALL EFFECT

"In the BP Oil Spill, more than 200 million gallons of crude oil was pumped into the Gulf of Mexico for a total of 87 days, making it the biggest oil spill in U.S. history." -dosomething.org

When oil is spilt it causes a lot of destruction and deaths. Within my images I want that impact to be shown. I would like my model to look dead and struggling to survive within the oil. As I haven't done any shoot before on such a big scale I'm nervous I won't be able to pull this off and create the dramatic effect i'm envisioning in my head. 

To make sure this goes to plan I want to find a photographer who likes to shoot in an artist way, I would also like him to shoot my whole book so he understands my ideas and the images flow. 

POSE INSPIRATION AND STYLE OF LIGHTING 

A range of images I really love down to the angle of the shot and the position the model is in, is by Brian Bowen Smith. He created a series of women who were naked but had their bodies is such contorted ways it makes the overall effect so much more interesting. The reason I was drawn to these images was because in some it gave me the impression they were dead or hiding from something. This is the effect and overall mood I want to portray in my images.

When shooting my oil spill I want to try and get my model to move her body in weird way. As fish and animals die in the ocean from these oil spills I would like to try and capture this feeling within a few of my images. Having my model nearly naked will also make the oil show up well and if they were to wear clothes it would be distracting the the viewer and distort the look of the body. I want it to be obvious it's a human. To show the harsh realities if oil spill were to happen on us instead of animals.

Learning More on Climate Change

With my new topic in mind I wanted to find out the effects climate change has on our earth as I thought this would be a good coffee table book as it's talking about a harsh topic but in a beautiful way.

While research I found so many topics I could touch on but also found i didn't want to just talk about the effects but also the impacts and what is causing this to happen.

Below I've listed a few topics I found interesting and thought would work well within an editoral shoot.

TURNING TO PINTEREST

With so many ideas I didn't really know where to start so I made a few mood boards on certain topics I liked. When beginning a photoshoot Pinterest is always the first place I start, it's great for inspiration and finding patterns and textures.
I just search words related to my topic or interest and add them to boards. It's good to look over your board afterwards as you can see it all in one place then.

One Topic i'm very passionate about is oil polluting and fracking. I knew I wanted this to be in my book as it's a very important topic for me as it is polluting the oceans we depend on to survive.

Create a moodboard for an oil spill look and source suitable materials to create an oil spill effect.
